Organisation Capacity Building
CWA co-organised the Children's Forum for the Children's Forum & Bangkok Regional Consultation Against the Most Intolerable Forms of Child Labour with Save the Children Alliance, Child Rights Asianet, ILO-IPEC, Redd Barna and UNICEF.
Seminar on Thailand's Position Regarding the Most Intolerable Forms of Child Labour in June 1997 was co-organised by CWA in collaboration with Foundation for Children Development, Foundation Center for the Protection of Children's Rights, Child Rights Asianet and the Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare.
CWA was a member of the organising Committee for the Asia-Pacific Regional Consultation in preparation for the First World Congress against Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children.
Strengthening Network
Update child labour situation at national, regional and international levels CWA participated in the following workshops and consultations:
- Roundtable against Trafficking of Women and Children in South Asia, Kathmandu, Nepal, organised by Asian Women's Human Rights Council.
- Regional Consultation on "The Impact of Trans-boundary Migration on Urbanisation" organised by Asia Pacific 2000 Project/UNDP, Asian Migrant Centre and Asian Cultural Forum on Development (ACFOD).
- Terres des Home-South East Asia Mainland's framework planning workshop in Vietnam and the international framework planning conference in Germany
- Workshop with ASIANET for Mekong countries on Child Trafficking .
- CWA representative participated in a sub-regional Consultation on trafficking held in New Delhi in July 1996.
- Asian Summit on Child Rights and the Media, Philippines.
- CWA was nominated a member of the Asian Advisory Committee for the First Regional Consultation on Child Domestic Workers, November 1997 by Visayan Forum.
International Cooperation
CWA is now an associate member of the Defense for Children International (DCI). and is also a member of a sub-organising committee for the next DCI assembly to be held in Asia in 1999.
CWA was the contact point for Southeast Asia and Mekong Basin sub-region for the NGO Forum for Working Children in Oslo, Norway.
CWA facilitated the participation of a child worker and also attended the Amsterdam Child Labor Conference.
CWA representative attended the World Congress against Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children in Stockholm.

One day seminar organised by Shoishab Bangladesh in Dhaka to campaign against child domestic workers and to share the outcomes of the exchange program, March 1997.
Baseline Survey with child domestic workers conducted by Sri Lanka Interactive Group in Colombo and in Yogyakarta, Indonesia May-July 1997 by Secretariat Bersama Perpuan Yogyakarta (SBPY).
Non Formal Education for child domestic workers started by Child Workers in Nepal (CWIN), June 1997.
National Seminar on child domestic workers in Islamabad, Pakistan organised by SACH, September 1997.

Publications and Audio Visual Production
The Invisible Children was published by CWA in collaboration with the International Save the Children Alliance member organisations in South and East Asia and the Pacific Region. The publication seeks to highlight the diverse contexts and conditions in which children work in selected countries in the Asia-Pacific region, as well as to analyse some of the key factors contributing to child labour and the main challenges to be addressed at the local and national levels in tackling the most intolerable forms of work that children do. Special attention is paid to the plight of the "invisible Children" in the case studies included from various countries.
- A Thai video documentary "Working with Working Children" which profiles the key activities of a model organisations in Thailand has been completed with the support of ILO-IPEC.

Communicate
During CWA's 4th Regional Consultation it was decided that CWA would circulate a communication leaflet among network members on a regular basis. Three issues of the circulate have been produced and distributed. The name has been changed to Communicate.

Projects
Exchange Programmes
A Field Workers' Exchange Programme was organised by the Task Force on Domestic Child Workers in March 1997 and hosted by Shoishab, Bangladesh. The exchange program was organised with the support of the Overseas Development Administration (ODA), South East Asia Development Division, Bangkok. The regional exchange programme was the first of its kind in South Asia. CWA also facilitated the participation of Visayan Forum, Philippines at the Exchange Programme.
CWA coordinated and funded an exposure trip to Peace Trust, Tamil Nadu and Arunodhaya in Madras, India for three staff members of Concern for Working Children and Environment Nepal in July 1997. The program aimed at strengthening NGO coordination and partnerships between the participating countries; to share and document child labour situations at the state and national levels; to draw lessons and methodologies on how to contact and assist child workers.
The Study Tour of Cambodia by Vietnamese NGO Delegation in March 1997 was coordinated by Child Workers in Asia (CWA) and Terre des Hommes Germany in Vietnam. It was hosted by the Cambodian Center for the Protection of Children's Rights (CCPCR) in collaboration with Krousar Thmey, Redd Barna-Cambodia and the Cambodia Women's Crisis Center (CWCC). The study tour was organised to facilitiate a working relationship between Vietnamese and Cambodian welfare agencies which provide concrete services to those girls.
Trafficking and Migration
THAI Coordinating Committee on Migrant Children
CWA has been instrumental in engineering a Task Force on Migrant Children in Thailand. The Task Force organised a meeting and a National Seminar on Migrant Children involving government and non-government organisations, international NGOs and academicians. The objective was to formulate a strategic procedure on how to work with the issue of migrant children.
As a follow up to the recommendations of the Task Force, the THAI Coordinating Committee on Migrant Children was set up in Thailand in 1997. The Committee has published its first newsletter Migrant Children in Thai. The Committee organised a workshop on Protection of Migrant Children focusing on legal aspects and practical approaches.
Research on Khmer Migrant Children
CWA took part in a survey research on Khmer migrant children in Thailand in cooperation with Redd Barna Child Labor Project. The objectives of the research are to study the situation and factors involved in child labour cross-border and to present the research findings, alternatives and possible solutions to the concerned agencies both at national and regional level.
Networking with Cross Border Organisations
The Lao Youth Union, Foundation for Child Development and CWA organised a field awareness raising programme on child labour issues. Two Laotian girls were repatriated demonstrating a child friendly approach to repatriation of migrant child labourers.
Ongoing Activities
Global March
CWA facilitated the participation of the National Task Force on Working Children, (Malaysia), Arunodhaya (India) and INSEC (Nepal) at the Regional Meeting of the Global March Against Child Labor in May 1997.
CWA staff was nominated facilitator for Thailand to coordinate Global March activities in Thailand in February 1998.
Working Paper on Child Domestic Workers
CWA editorial team is currently preparing a working paper on child domestic workers. This paper will give a broader perspective of the issue, for example, legal aspects and the girl child.
Regional Video Documentary - Working with Working Children
CWA Resource Center with the support of ILO-IPEC is working on a regional video documentary titled - Working with Working Children. The video will be used to illustrate activities for approaches to assist child labourers in three countries: Bangladesh, Indonesia and Thailand. The Thai video which profiles the key activities of model organisations in Thailand is complete. Indonesia partner has submitted a proposal to the ILO-IPEC country office, and follow up work is being done with Bangladesh partner.
